…5 pence and you get a kiss from the artist herself…merci.

While in Paris, I spent an afternoon in the Pompidou Centre absorbing the most provoking exhibit I have ever had the chance to experience.  It showcased the work of 60’s, 70’s, 80’s women artists such as Niki de Saint Phalle, Hannah Wilke and Georgia O’Keefe.  These artists were not only on the forefront of the women’s rights movement, they were also part of an ongoing battle in equality in the male dominated art world.

This letter, although cute in tone doesn’t mask the ugly truth it speaks of. In fact, pieces and the subject matter (rape, pornograhpy, lude nudes) of this exhibit I found to be “ugly.”  But the truth is, the female form and all these subjects are commonly found in the work of male artists and yet our social reaction is less extreme.  Interesting…  We see lude acts in movies and LOLWhy is it “ugly” in a gallery and yet capable of making us LMAO in a theatre… Interesting no?

My vote on this one is ART.
